Colombo. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said on Monday that the country will attract 2 million tourists in 2024 for the first time in the history of the tourism industry since its inception. Local media gave this information on Monday. Muizzu, in his maiden presidential address this morning to the final session of the 19th Parliament, said the expansion of the Velana International Airport (VIA) will increase tourist arrivals by an average of 10.3 per cent.

The President said his government wants to open 20 new resorts this year to promote tourism, and 2,827 beds will be built in them. He said he was now looking into the barriers to development of islands, land plots and lagoons leased for tourism development.

We are looking for solutions to the development works that have been stalled due to various reasons. According to official figures, Maldives is expected to receive more than 18 lakh tourist arrivals in 2023. According to the data released by the Ministry of Tourism, more than 1,92,000 tourists arrived in the country in January 2024, which is 11.5 percent more than the same period last year.
