Mark Boucher wanted to reduce the burden of captaincy from Rohit Sharma, said- he is important for the team as a batsman.

Cape Town. Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher admitted that he had to take the difficult decision of removing Rohit Sharma from the captaincy of the team to give him the freedom to play freely as a batsman. Rohit’s performance in the last two seasons of IPL has not been as per expectations.

In the most talked about ‘cash trade’ in IPL history, the Reliance-owned franchise brought back Gujarat Titans captain all-rounder Hardik Pandya and made him captain. Rohit has been among the most successful captains of IPL with five titles. Under the leadership of Hardik, Gujarat Titans were champions in their first season and runners-up in the second season.

“We saw a window to get Hardik back as a player,” Boucher told South Africa-based podcast ‘Banter With The Boys’. He said, we need Rohit as a player. He is a very important player for the team and we want him to enjoy his game without the burden of captaincy.

This former South African wicketkeeper batsman said, his performance with the bat and as a captain has not been good in the last few seasons. After discussing with everyone in the Mumbai Indians group, we thought that he should be given the freedom to play freely in the last few years of his career. Boucher said, he is still captaining India, so after coming to the IPL, the captaincy pressure on him will be less. With this perhaps we could get the best performance out of him.
