Massive gas explosion in Kenya’s capital, three dead, more than 200 injured

Nairobi, Kenya). At least three people died and more than 200 were injured when a truck carrying gas cylinders exploded in Kenya’s capital Nairobi early Friday morning, burning several houses and warehouses. Authorities fear the death toll will rise.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said most people were inside their homes when the fire broke out late at night. The spokesman said a truck with unknown registration number and carrying gas cylinders exploded, causing a massive fire. A flying gas cylinder hit the ‘Oriental Warehouse’, burning the clothing warehouse to ashes.

Several other vehicles and business buildings were damaged in the fire which broke out at about 11.30pm in the Maradi area of ‚Äč‚ÄčEmbakasi, near Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross reported that three people died in the incident. Embakasi police chief Wesley Kimeto said the death toll was expected to rise. The government said 222 people were injured and admitted to hospitals. The Kenya Red Cross later reported that more than 270 people were injured.
