Sunil Gavaskar praised R Ashwin fiercely, said- he should have got captaincy two years ago

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently congratulated Ravichandran Ashwin who completed 500 Test wickets. He believed that this legendary off-spinner should have got the captaincy of the Test team two years ago. Ashwin, on Friday 16 February, became the second bowler for India to take 500 Test wickets. He made it to the rare list that included India’s only Anil Kumble when he dismissed opener Jack Crawley in England’s first innings.

Gavaskar feels that Ashwin’s talent has always made him a player with captaincy potential for India. Gavaskar has said that he should have got the honor of captaincy two years ago. Last year, when India fielded many different teams, Ashwin was the most experienced player of the Test team. At one time KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah got the captaincy, but R Ashwin did not get the respect he deserved.

Sunil Gavaskar said in his column for Mid-Day, “Congratulations to Ravichandran Ashwin on getting his 500th Test wicket. He has been a very tremendous cricketer. One of the finest thinkers in the game and always willing to try something new and different, be it the run-up, the delivery action and of course, the delivery that baffles the batsman.”

The former Indian captain further said, “He should have been honored with the India captaincy a few years ago when two Indian teams were playing at the same time. Well done, Ashwin, and wishing you more wickets, new balls and different action in the future.” Let us tell you that Ashwin had to withdraw from the match after the second day of Rajkot Test match, because he had to return to Chennai due to some family medical emergency. However, he became a part of the team again on the fourth day of the match.
