WPL 2024: Australia’s Michael Klinger becomes the coach of Gujarat Giants, will work with Mithali Raj and Nushin

Mumbai Former Australian cricketer Michael Klinger was on Tuesday appointed the head coach of Gujarat Giants, replacing Rachael Haynes for the second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The second season of WPL will start from 23 February. All its matches will be played in Delhi and Bengaluru. Gujarat Giants had finished last in the inaugural edition of the five-team league last season. The team will face defending champions Mumbai Indians in the season opener in Bengaluru on February 25 in the upcoming season.

Former India captain Mithali Raj will continue her role as a mentor and advisor to the team, while Nooshin Al Khadeer will remain the bowling coach, the franchise said in a media release here. However, it was not told whether Tushar Arothe, who was the batting coach in the first season, will continue in his role or not.

Klinger, who played three T20 Internationals for Australia in 2017, said in the release that Gujarat Giants have a chance to do something special in the second season of the Women’s Premier League. I am eagerly looking forward to working with cricket legend Mithali Raj. Mithali has played an important role in bringing change in women’s cricket in India. Klinger has been the assistant coach of Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League. “Her expertise with the bat is well known and it will definitely benefit some of the younger members of our team,” Mithali said in the release.
